【故事梗概】

在駕車去Pete Waters的農(nóng)場的路上， Grandpa 在靠近切斯特頓的一個汽車加油站停下來加油，并意外的從加油站的工作人員那里知道了一條去農(nóng)場的近路。

Attendant: Hello. What can I do for you?

Grandpa: Hi. Fill ’er up. I need a full tank.

Attendant: Check the hood?

Grandpa: No, thanks.

Attendant: Whereaboutsare you headed?

Grandpa: Pete Waters’ farm, near Chesterton.

Attendant: I know it well. Pete Waters’s lived around here almost as long as I have.

Grandpa: How long is it going to take for me to get here?

Attendant: About fifteen minutes. There’s a short cut -- if you know it.

Grandpa: No, I don’t. Could you tell me how to use the short cut?

Attendant: Sure. You take the next left turn. You’ll see a stop sign. Make a right at the stop sign. Stay on that road, and you’ll cross a blue bridge. Then you’ll see a big old red barn. That’s the back of Pete Waters’ place.

Grandpa: That’s quite a difference from the directionsthat Pete sent me.

Attendant: Now, if you take that route, it’s probably a lot simpler, but it’ll take you ten minutes longer.

【語言點(diǎn)精講】

1. Fill ’er up. I need a full tank.

Fill’er up: 給車加滿汽油。是常用的非正式說法。這是美國特有的俗語，專用于在加油站加油時；’er是 her的省略音。為了節(jié)約人工，現(xiàn)在加油站常設(shè)顧客自己動手加油的油泵，這句話的使用頻率大為降低了。

tank: 汽車上的油箱。

2. Check the hood?

要不要檢查一下引擎、機(jī)油什么的？

美國是汽車王國，一般家庭都有兩部以上的汽車，各地加油站密布，大部分加油站都分自助區(qū)（self service）和全套服務(wù)區(qū)（full service），前者要顧客自己加油，后者由服務(wù)員幫忙加油，并提供擦窗，檢查機(jī)油等服務(wù)，價(jià)錢較貴。

3. Whereabouts are you headed?

你往哪里去？

Whereabouts: 哪里，等同于 Where。在美國有些地區(qū)習(xí)慣于用這個詞。

be headed (for a place): 是“朝某處去”，其語言略俗。

4. You take the next left turn. You’ll see a stop sign. Make a right at the stop sign. Stay on that road, and you’ll cross a blue bridge. Then you’ll see a big old red barn. That’s the back of Pete Waters’ place.

這是加油站的工作人員在告訴Grandpa去農(nóng)場的近路。讓我們來看看其中的一些表達(dá)。

take the next left turn. : 在下一條路口左轉(zhuǎn)。

a stop sign：停車標(biāo)志。在小路與大路交叉的地方，在小路一側(cè)常有寫STOP的標(biāo)記，示意車子到此應(yīng)先停下，看清大路上沒有撞車危險(xiǎn)后再前進(jìn)。

make a right : 右轉(zhuǎn)。也可以說“make a right turn”或者 “turn to the right”。

Stay on that road, and you’ll cross a blue bridge. : 在那條路上開，你會經(jīng)過一座藍(lán)色的橋。

barn：是美國農(nóng)場上的大牲口棚，下層栓大牲口，上層貯飼草。有時旁邊還有一圓柱塔形建筑，貯藏飼料。亦指貯谷物的建筑物，谷棚。

5. Now, if you take that route, it’s probably a lot simpler, but it’ll take you ten minutes longer.

喏，你要是走那條路線，可能簡單得多，可是要多花10分鐘的時間。

a lot simpler: 簡單得多。在比較級上添加表示程度或幅度的狀語時，要加在比較級的前面，又如: a little harder（有一點(diǎn)難），much bigger（大得多），an inch longer（長出一英寸），somewhat quicker（多少快一些）。
