the goods:在口語中可以用來指真正的貨物，也可以用來代指information。說某人get the goods，是指這個人對某事很在行，肚子里很有貨。這是一種比較不禮貌的俚語用法。
know the ropes: 知道事情的真相(或竅門，做法，規(guī)則)；熟悉(某種社會的)內(nèi)情；懂得(某種行業(yè)的)竅門；很內(nèi)行。
procedure: 步驟，程序。
trick: 訣竅，竅門。

【故事梗概】
Philip從醫(yī)院回來，看見Grandpa正在擺弄釣具。Grandpa想勸誘Philip也去釣魚，用盡了心思，喚起了Philip對少年時光的追憶。Philip決定放下第二天的工作帶Robbie去釣魚。
Philip: Going fishing?
Grandpa: I’m thinking about it. So, how’s work?
Philip: Oh, the usual problems.
Grandpa: You’re working pretty hard these days.
Philip: I guess I am.
Grandpa: When did you last go fishing with Robbie?
Philip: I remember exactly. It was on his birthday, June second, two years ago. We didn’t catch anything.
Grandpa: Remember our fishing trips?
Philip: Yes. I loved them.
Grandpa: Remember catching your first fish?
Philip: How can I forget? I fell out of the boat! We had some good times together.
Grandpa: Yes, we did. Maybe we should do it again.
Philip: How about tomorrow?
Grandpa: Don’t you have to work?
Philip: My paper work will wait.
Grandpa: Oh, Robbie will be thrilled. I am, too, Son.
Philip: I want to spend more time with Robbie.
Grandpa: Tomorrow. It’ll be like old times for you and me. And Robbie will love it.
Philip: Well, what’s the weather going to be like?
Grandpa: Radio says sunny and mild.
Philip: Well, I’ll tell Robbie. And thanks, Dad.
Grandpa: Don’t thank me. I’m just being a grandfather.
【語言點(diǎn)精講】
1. Going fishing?
要去釣魚嗎？動詞go可與其他表示活動的動詞的ing形式連用，表示“去做某事”。如go running（跑步），go swimming（去游泳），go dancing（去跳舞），go shopping（去購物）等。
2. I’m thinking about it.
think about: 考慮，尤指計劃，看其是否可行。
3. Remember catching your first fish?
記得你頭一次釣到一條魚嗎？remember doing something意為記得曾做某事，而remember to do something是記住要去做某件事。
4. I fell out of the boat!
注意Philip發(fā)音時"out of the boat"讀成"outa the boat"。在口語中，of一詞中的f常常不發(fā)音。
5. We had some good times together.
我們在一起度過一段美好的時光。
have some good times是“玩得好”的意思，與 have some fun 用法相近。
6. Maybe we should do it again.
Maybe (we) should… 也許（我們）應(yīng)該……，這是用來提建議的另一種句法。
7. It’ll be like old times.
過去的美好時光又要重現(xiàn)。當(dāng)未來發(fā)生的某種事與過去的某個愉快的經(jīng)歷相似時可用這個句子。
8. What’s the weather going to be like？
天氣會是怎么樣？這是一個詢問未來天氣情況的問句。
9. I’m just being a grandfather.
我只是在當(dāng)個好爺爺而已。
這里用了動詞 be的現(xiàn)英語口語情景對話,常用英語口語,走遍美國在進(jìn)行時，表示人們在說話時正在進(jìn)行的短暫活動或行為，常含有各種感情色彩。如：
