【故事梗概】

Grandpa向一個(gè)農(nóng)場(chǎng)工人問路，確認(rèn)了Pete的房子的位置。到達(dá)后，他在門上看到了Pete留下的字條。

Grandpa: [He stops the car to ask a farm worker for directions to Pete’s house.]Hi.

Worker: Hi. What can I do for you?

Grandpa: Is this the Pete Waters farm?

Worker: It is.

Grandpa: I’m a friend of Pete’s. I’m looking for the house.

Worker: It’s just over yonder.[ He points.] Keep along this road till you get to the end of the fence. You’ll see the chicken house. His house is on the left.

Grandpa: Well, thanks.

[A little later. Grandpa arrives at Pete’s house. He reads a note that Pete has left on the front door for him.]

Grandpa: "Have gone to the rail-road station. Back soon with a surprise. Make yourself at home. Have a look around. Pete. "[ He laughs. ] Same old Pete Waters. Always full of surprises.

【語言點(diǎn)精講】

1. What can I do for you?

這是一位農(nóng)場(chǎng)工人在和Grandpa打招呼。“What can I do for you?”可以用來和人打招呼，尤其是當(dāng)這個(gè)人很明顯是在找什么的時(shí)候。

2. I’m a friend of Pete’s. I’m looking for the house.

我是Pete的朋友，我在找他的家。

a friend of Pete’s: 這里使用的是名詞的雙重所有格，等同于“one of Pete’s friends”。

look for: 這里的意思是“尋找”。

3. It’s just over yonder.

就在那邊。

over yonder: 在那邊。在美國，有些地區(qū)用這種非正式說法。

4. Keep along this road till you get to the end of the fence. You’ll see the chicken house. His house is on the left.

一直順著這條路走，直走到柵欄盡頭，就看見雞棚了。他的房子在左邊。

keep along this road till…: 一直順著這條路走直到……

fence: 柵欄，籬笆。

be on the left: 在左邊，在左手邊。

5. Have gone to the rail-road station. Back soon with a surprise. Make yourself at home. Have a look around.

到火車站去了。很快回來，會(huì)給你帶來意外的驚喜。請(qǐng)不要客氣。到處看一看。

這時(shí)Pete留在門上的字條的內(nèi)容。寫便條的時(shí)候，通常是不加主語的。這段話的完整形式應(yīng)該是“I have gone to the rail-road station. I will be back soon with a surprise. Please make yourself at home. You can have a look around.”

Make yourself at home. : 請(qǐng)隨便；不要拘束；像在自己家里一樣。招待客人時(shí)常用的句子。

Have a look around. : 到處看一看。等同于“Look around.”
