1. 表示“檢查”，注意以下與動(dòng)詞和介詞的常用搭配：

He made an examination of the room. 他檢查了房間。

We carried out a medical examination. 我們進(jìn)行了體格檢查。

2. 表示具體的一次一次的“檢查”或“考試”，它通常是可數(shù)名詞，但有時(shí)表示抽象意義的檢查或考試，則為不可數(shù)名詞。如：

Admission to this school is by examination. 進(jìn)入該校須經(jīng)過考試。

On examination I found the goods of poor quality. 我一檢查就發(fā)現(xiàn)了這些貨物質(zhì)量不行。

【注】under examination 在檢查中，在審查中。如：

The prisoner is still under examination (=being examined). 囚犯仍在受審。

3. 表示“考試”，還需注意以下幾點(diǎn)：

(1) 表示參加考試，通常用動(dòng)詞 take, sit (for)，enter (for) 等;表示通過考試或考試及格，通常用動(dòng)詞 pass; 表示考試沒通過或沒及格，通常用動(dòng)詞 fail (in)。如：

About 500 students took [sat, sat for] the examination. 大約有五百學(xué)生參加了考試。

Of those who took the exam, only thirty percent passed. 參加考試的人中間，只有百分之三十的人通過了。

Both of them failed (in) the examination. 他們倆人考試都沒有及格。

【注】“參加考試”可用動(dòng)詞 take, 但不用 take part in。如不說：I didn’t take part in the exmination.

(2) 表示某一方面的考試，可直接用名詞用定語，也可在其后接介詞 in。如：a maths examination(數(shù)學(xué)考試)，an examination in chemistry(化學(xué)考試)。

(3) “高考”或“大學(xué)入學(xué)考試”說成英語是：college entrance examinatons /examinations for college entrance /examinationsfor admission to college。
